Deycha may have graduated and left the Michigan rugby team, but she certainly has not left the sport! Across the country, Deycha has continued her growth as an athlete. Catch up with a rugger who never stops working and improving!
Years of Rugby Experience:
Prop, 8, Lock
What have you been up to since graduation?
I moved to Seattle (along with two other UMWRFC alumnae) after graduation! I have held down several different jobs, all culminating in a career in project coordinating and marketing administrative support for a local real estate company. I am an artist by trade and have been expanding and learning in that area - selling prints and working on future publications (fingers crossed for me?) [Note: check out Deycha's work below!] I also have been playing on the Seattle DII rugby team, Emerald City Mudhens as a lock. We are the reigning PNW DII CHAMPS and looking forward to competing for a spot at Nationals this year!
Are there any lessons, skills, or memories from your time on the team that have been helpful to you since then?
I have built the most beautiful family out of UMWRFC. The moments you are currently sharing will make unparalleled memories. Work hard for each other. Love each other. Advocate for and make space for your black women and folks of color on the team and at large. Always listen to each other and check your presumptions along with your privileges <3 I love you all.
What is your favorite Michigan rugby experience?
Nationals 2011 and ALL THE DEBAUCHERY! Ask me for stories next time we’re together.
Do you have any advice for current ruggers?
Fight like hell to create an environment that nurtures you! Take no bullshit and laugh as much as possible.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Come visit us in Seattle - there are currently 5 of us in the city!
