Michigan Rugby welcomes new strength and conditioning coach

February 12, 2016

The Michigan Rugby program named Josh Verran as the new head strength and conditioning coach. Verran replaces long time coach Stu Roche who left for Marquette University to fill their associate strength and conditioning coach position. He will be joining a new look Michigan Rugby that has seen both the men and women’s team combine efforts to progress both teams in vital areas away from the field line strength and conditioning.

“We looked for the best person to lead the men and women in our program and make sure they get the best out of them everyday and Josh is the perfect person for that” said Director of Rugby Brandon Sparks. Men’s captain Jeremy Reid added “We enjoy the intensity of the workouts and the injury prevention that he has added because these are often overlooked in some programs, but not with Josh.” Megan Melton, the women’s captain and president expanded on Reid’s comments “He is very approachable and tailors the workouts to suit our teams’ needs as rugby athletes”

Verran earned the chance to work with the athletes of Michigan Rugby with his strong experience of working with large groups. Before coming to Ann Arbor for school he served in the Air Force, worked as an instructor for a crossfit box and finished his internship with Michigan Football this past semester. This is his first head coaching position but his past experience will make him a success.

“I’m extremely excited to see the continued progression in the weight room by the athletes” said Verran “ I’m also excited to see their efforts on the field add to the legacy of both rugby programs.”

Verran began working with both teams at the start of the semester. He will continue to lead the players through the process that will end with the CRC in June 5-7.
