SISU February Player of the Month: Vicky Whydell

For four long years, Vicky has helped build and grow this team. On the field, she's team captain and a integral part of the backline as our scrum-half. However, off the field, she's been Treasurer and Fundraising Chair for our Admin Board, a fantastic big to four littles, and a reliable friend and teammate. We will be sad to see Vicky go at the end of this season, but we are thrilled to give her some time in the spotlight as our SISU Player of the Month!

How long have you been playing?

I've been proudly sporting UMWRFC's maize and blue for the past 4 years!

Why rugby?

Why not? I grew up in a country and household that were both BIG rugby fans, so the game is in my blood. The skills, strategy, physicality, and endurance make rugby one of the toughest sports in the world, but the respect and camaraderie within the rugby community make it one of the most fun as well!

In 5 years, what do you see yourself doing?

Data Analysis or Software Engineering within the sports/entertainment/finance industry - and hopefully officiating, coaching, and/or playing rugby!

Favorite place in Ann Arbor?

I can't pick just one, so it's a tie between Mitchell Field, Yost Ice Arena, the Baits II Community Center, and VizHub 11 at the Duderstadt Center!

Favorite memory at Michigan so far?

My favourite memory at Michigan has to be midnight bin bag sledding on North Campus after finishing a giant EECS project, but a standout Michigan rugby memory from this year was actually somewhere in Ohio, when the team all piled into a random McDonald's after our best match of the season, and then we all crowded around one laptop to cheer on our favourite former teammate/current USA Eagle at the World Sevens series!

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

J.K. Rowling - despite just about everything going wrong in her life, she kept doing what she loved and created work that has absolutely changed the world.

If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be?

Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough - original, reliable, and usually full of chocolate.

Favorite quote?

Best class you've ever taken at Michigan?

EECS 493 - User Interface Development (Fall '18 with Mark Guzdial); I was really interested in the class, the professor was really enthusiastic about what he was teaching and how we were learning, I worked with a really fun group on our term project, and the class helped steer me towards my current career path!

Any hidden talents?

I'm a decent ice skater!

Brunch or linner?

On campus, brunch. Off campus, linner, because then dessert can be a meal all by itself.

What continent do you most want to visit?

Oceania, because I've got family and rugby ties to Australia and New Zealand, so I'd love to visit both!

Favorite condiment?

Nutella, hands down.
