SISU January Player of the Month: Jillian Cwycyshyn
At the start of a new year, we are recognizing the achievements of a new rugger. Jill joined the team this September, and made a big impression from her first days on the field. By the time we mastered saying her last name correctly (like “swiss-session”), Jill’s aptitude as a player was clearly evident. A regular on the starting lineup, Jill has settled into the forward pack as a reliable 8-woman. Jill scored twice against Oakland this season, and we are looking forward to seeing her growth over the next few years!
Hometown: Ferndale, Michigan
Major: Biomedical Engineering (intended)
I met a few people in high school that play rugby and they basically introduced me to and sparked my interest in the sport. From what I knew about rugby, it seemed like the perfect fit for me, so I thought I'd give it a try! (HA puns) I played tennis throughout high school, and I enjoyed it. But as soon as I found rugby, I realized that this sport was a way better game for me! Also, you belong to a team full of empowered, strong, and phenomenal women: who wouldn't want to play this sport?
In five years, what do you see yourself doing?
Hopefully in med school, working to become Dr. Jill.
Favorite place in Ann Arbor?
The elevator in Mason Hall. It's so fast and gets you where you need to go. The second after you step into that elevator, it closes (you have to be quick or else you might lose some toes). Compared to all other elevators on Michigan's campus and in all of North America, this elevator is BY FAR superior. When I'm walking into Mason Hall at 2:38 for my class at 2:30, I feel truly comforted to know that the elevator will get me to the 3rd floor in a matter of seconds.
Favorite memory at Michigan so far?
My favorite memory does happen to be rugby related and it was during my first home game. Many of my friends and family came to support me and see what rugby was all about! I scored my first try that game. I hadn't experienced that awesome feeling of diving into the try zone during a real game yet, but it was great and even better because my friends and family were there to experience it with me.
Who is your biggest inspiration and why?
This question is always so hard because there are so many inspirational people in the world! If I had to choose, the most directly influential and inspiring person in my life is my mother. She's not afraid to be who she is! She has no shame in voicing her opinions, taking action and standing up for what's right, and simply being a badass woman.
If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be?
Mango Unchained from Treat Dreams in Ferndale, MI (it has mango, Southern Comfort, and cayenne pepper).
Favorite food or guilty pleasure?
Peanut butter or spaghetti
I’m quite good at henna tattoos so if you want one, hit me up!
