SISU April Player of the Month: Samantha Taylordean
Samantha "Sam" Taylordean
Sam is one of our captains and is graduating this year. She has been playing fiercely since her freshmen year and her leadership has been integral to developing the team we have now. Thankfully we won't have say goodbye just yet because she is sticking around for some even higher education!!
Major: Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering
Hometown: Summerfield, NC
I had played soccer my entire life, and I somehow missed club soccer tryouts, so I decided it was time to change sports. Also, I have a lot of aggression so nice to be in a sport where that is celebrated.
in 5 years, what do you see yourself doing? GOOD QUESTION!! I just had a major life shift where I declined my job working in Seattle at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and am instead on the PhD track at UofM for Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering! So hopefully in 5 years I will be finishing up with that, and have some sort of post-grad plans lined up. I'd love to still be involved with rugby (is DRFC [Detroit Rugby Football Club] in my future??? Only time can tell)
favorite place in Ann Arbor? Nothing like naps in my hammock on the diag.
who is your biggest inspiration and why?
My parents. They are such a unit but also ridiculous. They're pretty cool people. Also, they never let me win board games as a kid, which is what I attribute my fiercely competitive streak to.
favorite quote? "The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by the dirt and sweat and blood. Who strives valiantly, and spends himself in a worthy cause. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither defeat or victory" – Theodore Roosevelt
best advice you've ever gotten?
My dad always says something along the lines of "hit hard, run fast" which I really have taken to heart and hope I've passed on.
favorite Michigan memory?
This is a hard one... but I'll go with a cute cliche. This semester I did my senior design project and we presented at design expo. Essentially the whole team came all the way up to north campus (really a trek as most of them don't use a bus) to see my project!!! Really embodies the spirit of rugby and our team, where we support each other on and off the field. Love you people.
if you were an ice cream flavor, which would you be? Probably a coffee flavored one where people who only sorta are into coffee are like, that's good but I couldn't eat a whole cone (I'm a really intense person).
what continent do you most want to visit?
