Alumnae Feature: May

Emily Glodzik

Happy May! In honor of the month where we celebrate our mothers, we are featuring an alum who recently became a mother herself, Emily Miller Glodzik! Congrats and thanks for sharing with us!

Graduation Year: 2005

Years playing rugby: 15

Position: Fullback, wing

Nickname: Emily Miller

What have you been up to and where are you now?

Currently living in Washington, DC. 6 years ago I went back to school and got my Masters at GWU for Speech-Language Pathology - now I work with 5th and 6th graders at a school for students who have language and learning differences. It took a little while to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, and it feels great to finally have a job that I really enjoy. I also just had a baby daughter, Samantha, in January.

Most memorable rugby moment?

We were playing Michigan State, and I really hated their #10 - she seemed full of herself and was quite a loudmouth. She was running with the ball and I laid her out. It was the only time I made someone cry when I tackled them, and it was a legitimate hit. She took a few minutes to get up and shake it off, and I felt like I'd conquered the world!

Any rugby experience post graduation?

I played for Chicago North Shore for a couple of years after graduating, and then moved home to DC and joined the DC Furies. I've played for the Furies ever since (though am semi-retired at this point), along with a couple of MARFU 15s and 7s sides. Most recently, I played (and won the Club division) with the area's Old Girls team at the Furies' annual Ruggerfest Tournament.

Advice for current ruggers?

Take care of your body early - even if you're naturally athletic, stretch, lift the weights, and run the intervals now. You'll thank yourself in 10 years! Also, don't lose sight of what makes rugby great - the family you're a part of once you strap on those cleats for the first time. I met my husband and most of my best friends through rugby, and place immense value on being a member of such an open, accepting, and passionate community.
