UMWRFC went to CRCs!
This past May, the Michigan women headed down to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships from May 29th to May 31, 2015. The CRCs is a sevens tournament held each year and features the top rugby college teams in the nation.
The girl's initial pool included Penn State (last years champion), James Madison (Last years 2nd place) and Notre Dame University who they had played during their fall season. The opening game for the wolverines was versus James Madison where the girls capitalized when they needed to and won by one try! The girls then suffered a loss to Penn State, who eventually went on to win the championship at the end of the weekend, but finished the day with a win over Notre Dame to end the first day on a high note.
On day two the girls played inside of PPL park facing Notre Dame for the second time, finishing with a solid victory in the large arena. Yet, the highlight of the tournament was their next game against JMU; many fans had shown up to support and emotions were running high. The game was down to the wire, JMU missed their kick to hold a tie and brought the game into overtime where Megan Melton scored another two tries to win us the game!
This brought the girls to the game for 5th place against the varsity team from Life University. While the girls were not able to pull out the win after a long weekend, they all agreed that the exprience of participating in a national tournament was incredible beneficial and rewarding! It has certainly fueled the team for this upcoming year.
